Each month, we highlight an awesome light installation in and around Calgary.
Last summer, St. Patrick’s Island in Downtown Calgary welcomed an interesting new piece of public art.
‘Bloom’ is a $500,000 sculpture made up of street lights pointing in all directions, created by Montreal-born artist Michel de Broin.
The piece weighs seven tonnes and is flood resistant – something key to development in the inner city after community revitalization setbacks caused by the 2013 floods.
At 23 meters high, the sculpture is visible from many points in the downtown core. It adds a level of visual texture to its surroundings, and the light elevates the mood in the park setting.
The lighting provided by the piece has also helped to alleviate some security concerns in the downtown park at night.

On the night that this photo was taken, they were testing the lighting levels after installation. Therefore the lights were much brighter that night than they typically are.
