You might notice a ‘RoHS Compliant’ label on your new LED bulbs – but do you know what it means? RoHS stands for ‘Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive.’
RoHS compliance prohibits the use of the six following toxic substances in electrical equipment, including bulbs and lamps:
- Polybrominated biphenyl ether (PBDE)
- Hexavalent chromium
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Cadmium
- Mercury
- Lead
These materials are hazardous to the environment and pollute landfills, and are dangerous in terms of occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling.
